INTERNATIONAL,JS- Regional Countries Step Up Health Screening, After Nipah Virus Cases in India

Several Asian countries have strengthened health checks and quarantine measures after Indian authorities confirmed five cases of the deadly Nipah virus near Kolkata, one of India’s largest cities. The outbreak includes infections among healthcare workers, triggering urgent containment efforts.

Deadly Virus Sparks International Concern

The Nipah virus primarily attacks the lungs and brain, causing fever, headache, drowsiness, confusion, and in severe cases, coma. According to the World Health Organization, the virus kills more than 40 percent of patients. Health experts warn that human-to-human transmission can occur through direct contact with bodily fluids, making hospitals and households high-risk environments.

“Authorities must enforce strict quarantine and monitoring to prevent further spread,” said Feng Zijian. Despite its high lethality, experts note that Nipah does not spread easily outside close contacts. Zhuang Shilihe, a Guangzhou-based specialist, emphasized that careful contact tracing during previous outbreaks revealed limited transmission.

Countries Strengthen Surveillance Measures

In response to the outbreak, several nations have taken immediate action. China added Nipah virus to its list of monitored infectious diseases in December 2024, alongside COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS. Feng indicated that China may intensify quarantine measures for travelers arriving from India.

Thailand began screening passengers arriving from West Bengal at major airports, including Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, and Phuket. Authorities coordinated with airline staff, airport officials, and immigration officers to ensure smooth operations and early detection.

The classification requires immediate reporting, patient isolation, and strict containment.

Preventing Wider Spread Remains Critical

Authorities in India and neighboring countries have ramped up contact tracing and quarantines. Health officials urge travelers and healthcare workers to report symptoms early and avoid unnecessary contact with infected individuals. Experts stress that public awareness, early detection, and rapid containment are crucial to prevent the virus from spreading further.

With vigilant monitoring and coordinated international response, health authorities aim to contain the outbreak before it escalates into a larger public health crisis.(TIM)
